Oakwood Golf Club

January 23, 2015

Oakwood Golf Club is a 27-hole facility located in a retirement community just off of Riggs Road in Sun Lakes. Depending on which 9s you draw, you’re playing either Palms, Sonoran, or Lakes. Today, we played Lakes/Palms, which measures 6,508 from the Tournament (Black) tees. The course rating is 71.3. The slope is 131. In my opinion, the Palms Course plays longer than the Lakes Course, although both 9s are…

Putting Quiz Answers

The other day, we looked at some putting stats from the PGA Tour last season and why the short game is so important. Sixty to 65% of strokes are played from 100 yards and in (43% of those are putts)! Harvey Penick, one of the greatest golf teachers of all time, believed that 90% of practice time should be spent on the short game. Here are the answers to the…

Take This Putting Quiz…

January 22, 2015

Today, we got our badges to work the driving range at the Waste Management Phoenix Open when the tournament comes to town next week. It’s quite an honor. Apparently, in years past, tour players have asked for Golf Academy students to run the range because they’ve done such a good job, and that’s why we have the privilege. This year marks the 80th Anniversary of the Phoenix Open. My shift…

Lou Holtz: “Do Right”

January 21, 2015

Class started bright and early this morning with a hearty helping of Business Management. We watched a motivational video called “Do Right” by former football coach turned ESPN commentator Lou Holtz. It was a little out-of-date but interesting nonetheless. The big takeways were do right, do your best, and treat others the way you would like to be treated (The Golden Rule). He also mentions the three universal questions he…

PGA Superstore TOUR

January 20, 2015

When we got to today’s Attitude & Motivation class, we got to take a personal, behind-the-scenes tour of the PGA TOUR Superstore located right next door. I told you the school was in an ideal spot. Turns out Dave, the GM of the Arizona Avenue store, graduated from the Golf Academy’s San Diego campus (the first of the five GAA campuses) back in 1986. Even when we were there a…

What a Week!

January 16, 2015

The first week of school is in the books, and what a week it was! I don’t have class on Fridays this semester, but because I signed up for my first lesson with PGA Master Teaching Professional Tim Eberlein, I found myself back on campus. For my first lesson, I decided to get fitted for a new set of irons. I’m doing it for a couple of reasons. First, a…

Quote of the Semester

On the back of each semester’s name placard, the Golf Academy prints a different quote. This semester’s quote reads: “Excellence is harder to achieve than mediocrity. Don’t worry about being better than anyone else, just never cease to attempt to be the best that you can be.”

Day No. 3

January 15, 2015

Three more classes on the schedule today: Rules of Golf, Mechanics of the Short Game, and Microcomputer Applications. At Rules of Golf, PGA Instructor Ed Ekis handed out the Rules in the pocket-sized version you’re probably used to seeing as well as an illustrated guide. It’s a glorified picture book of the different rules. There are 34 rules (plus subsets), and we’re going to memorize them all by the end of the…
