PGA Superstore TOUR

January 20, 2015

When we got to today’s Attitude & Motivation class, we got to take a personal, behind-the-scenes tour of the PGA TOUR Superstore located right next door. I told you the school was in an ideal spot. Turns out Dave, the GM of the Arizona Avenue store, graduated from the Golf Academy’s San Diego campus (the first of the five GAA campuses) back in 1986. Even when we were there a…

What a Week!

January 16, 2015

The first week of school is in the books, and what a week it was! I don’t have class on Fridays this semester, but because I signed up for my first lesson with PGA Master Teaching Professional Tim Eberlein, I found myself back on campus. For my first lesson, I decided to get fitted for a new set of irons. I’m doing it for a couple of reasons. First, a…

Quote of the Semester

On the back of each semester’s name placard, the Golf Academy prints a different quote. This semester’s quote reads: “Excellence is harder to achieve than mediocrity. Don’t worry about being better than anyone else, just never cease to attempt to be the best that you can be.”

Day No. 3

January 15, 2015

Three more classes on the schedule today: Rules of Golf, Mechanics of the Short Game, and Microcomputer Applications. At Rules of Golf, PGA Instructor Ed Ekis handed out the Rules in the pocket-sized version you’re probably used to seeing as well as an illustrated guide. It’s a glorified picture book of the different rules. There are 34 rules (plus subsets), and we’re going to memorize them all by the end of the…

Day No. 2

January 15, 2015

Two classes on the docket on Day 2 – Fundamentals of Business Management and History of Golf. When I saw Fundamentals of Business Management coming up, I thought I was in for a real snoozefest. Boy was I wrong! Professor RJ Lancaster is hilarious! Dude was dropping jokes like they were going out of style. He also had a lot of really good business ideas and even suggested ways to…

First Day of School!

January 13, 2015

Since the first few days of the spring semester have been spent mostly out in the field (a.k.a the golf course), today marked the first official day of classroom work. In my opinion, the first day of any school year is always the worst because that’s the day when you get bombarded with syllabi from every instructor. We showed up a little before 8:00a for Tim Wilkins’ Attitude & Motivation…

Orientation Day

January 8, 2015

Orientation Day got off to a 7:30a shotgun start at the Phoenix campus in Chandler. The campus just so happens to be located right next to a PGA Tour Superstore. How’s that for convenient? The Golf Academy is very serious about its dress code. Page Two of the Student Handbooks reads, “Men may not wear shorts while in class… hair must be styled neatly. Male students must wear their hair…

I Guess ‘Hello World’ Huh?

Ah, the now immortal words of Tiger Woods upon turning pro in August of 1996. No one is going to forget that. This is a lot more forgettable, but here goes anyway… I’m turning pro too! After months of deliberation, my new wife and I have decided to enroll at the Golf Academy of America in Chandler. I say ‘we’ because without her, none of this would be possible. Now’s…
