Kokopelli Golf Club

April 2, 2015

I’ll be honest, I had heard conflicting reports about Kokopelli Golf Club in Gilbert, and although I always try to remain as objective as possible heading into a course review, I’ll admit that my expectations were a little low. The course plays 6,716 yards from the Championship Tees to a Par of 72, a course rating of 72.1, and a slope of 135. The conditions reminded me a little of…

Oakcreek Country Club

March 27, 2015

Believe it or not, Sedona has just three golf courses – Sedona Golf Resort, Oakcreek Country Club, and Seven Canyons. Sedona Golf Resort is on your lefthand side as you enter town on Highway 179. Oakcreek is off Verde Valley School Road but is still only about two hours away from Phoenix. Phoenix is very centrally located. You can be just about anywhere in two hours – Sedona, Flagstaff, Prescott, or Tucson. I went up…

Southern Ridge Golf Club

Laveen, Arizona is home to more than one golf course! I have already heard great things about Aguila and hope to play it soon. But about five minutes past Aguila on Baseline Road is Southern Ridge Golf Club. The course plays 6,751 yards from the Black Tees to a Par of 72, a course rating of 71.5, and a slope of 121. If you look-up Southern Ridge online, you know that…

Toka Sticks Golf Club

March 5, 2015

If you want to play a good, tight, and tough little golf course, look no further than Toka Sticks Golf Club in East Mesa. The club is owned by the Gila River Indian Community and was designed by the Army Corps of Engineers in the early 1950s as a recreational facility for personnel stationed at Williams Air Force Base. The based closed in 1993, and now the course is open…

Vistal Golf Club

The closest thing to the Catalina Mountains (in Tucson where I’m from) in Phoenix is South Mountain Preserve located in the southwest part of the city. Nestled right at the base of the mountain is Vistal Golf Club. The course was re-designed in the year 2000 by PGA Tour Design Services in conjunction with local PGA Tour players Tom Lehman, Billy Mayfair, and Howard Twitty and opened in the fall of 2001. The…

Moon Valley Country Club

February 9, 2015

On Mondays, we always play a tournament round at a different course throughout the Valley. Today’s course was a special treat: Moon Valley Country Club in Phoenix. After playing Ahwatukee Country Club last week, this was like going from the outhouse to the penthouse. It was the first chance I’ve had to play a round with my new Titleist irons. Moon Valley hosted the LPGA Standard Register Ping tournament from 1983 through 2003….

Oakwood Golf Club

January 23, 2015

Oakwood Golf Club is a 27-hole facility located in a retirement community just off of Riggs Road in Sun Lakes. Depending on which 9s you draw, you’re playing either Palms, Sonoran, or Lakes. Today, we played Lakes/Palms, which measures 6,508 from the Tournament (Black) tees. The course rating is 71.3. The slope is 131. In my opinion, the Palms Course plays longer than the Lakes Course, although both 9s are…

Lone Tree Golf Club

January 14, 2015

Today, I returned to the site of Monday’s Welcome Schamble tournament, Lone Tree Golf Club in Chandler. The course derives its name from what’s left of the lone tree that sits just off the 9th tee. It was planted in 1899. The course plays 7,007 yards from the tips and features some pretty challenging sight lines off the tee. I say that because I steered my tee shots on the…

Today, I had the opportunity to tee it up with a couple of my fellow classmates at Western Skies Golf Club in Gilbert. The course plays 6,744 yards from the tips and offers very forgiving landing areas off the tee as wells as approach shots into small to medium-sized green…
