Great players don’t stand over the golf ball. They set up and hit it. One of the worst things you can do as a player is stand over the ball for too long, tensing up. You lose your rhythm, and you start to think negatively or mechanically. What suffers is your feel for the shot.

Todd Sones is a Golf Digest Top 50 Instructor who also serves on the Golf Academy National Advisory Board. He says most people need to incorporate a swing trigger into their pre-shot routine to keep them in motion.

If you look closely, many of the best players on various tours already do it. Take Jason Dufner, for example. He sets up over the ball, waggles his wrists, and then pulls the trigger. The move helped him win the 2013 PGA Championship.

As Todd demonstrates in the following video, a slight weight transfer onto your lead side can really work wonders.

Take one final look at your target, shift slightly onto your lead side, and then start the club back. To be a great player, you need a swing trigger. Before you know it, you’ll be thinking more about the target and less about your swing.
