Every fall, I get the same question over and over again from Tucson parents. It goes a little something like, “My son/daughter wants to try golf. Where do we even start?” Great question! Golf is one of the few sports a person can play for the rest of their life, it teaches lessons like patience and etiquette, and Tucson happens to be one of the best places in the country to play thanks to its mild fall and winter weather and more golf courses per capita than almost anywhere else in the Southwest.
But junior golf can be confusing and even daunting if you don’t know how to go about it. Do they need a full set of clubs on day one? Is age six too young to start? Is 12 too old? Should they enroll in a coaching program or begin with private lessons first? Here’s a straightforward guide to junior golf lessons in Tucson for parents looking to get their kids teeing it up this fall.
What Age Should a Kid Start?
There’s no single right age, but most coaches, myself included, find the sweet spot for coaching to be between 6 to 8 years old. That’s when kids tend to have the attention span and the coordination to actually retain what they’re taught, rather than just swinging at a ball for fun. That being said, I’ve worked with plenty of 10, 12, and even teenage beginners who have picked the game up quickly once they generate a real interest thanks to the coordination they learned playing other sports. I’ve also coached juniors as young as four or five. The honest answer is this: the right age is the age when your child is curious and asking to try it. Focus level, attention span, and interest matter more than age.

Do They Need Full Size Equipment?
No! And please don’t go out and buy an expensive junior set before their first coaching session. Most beginners do just fine borrowing or renting clubs for the first few sessions while a coach measures their height, assesses their swing, and gauges their interest level. Junior clubs should fit the junior at the height they are currently, not the size they will “grow into.” One of the worst things you can do is to give your son or daughter clubs that are either too big or too small. Rather than guessing up front, a good coach will point you in the right direction once your junior is actually committed to playing the game.
Private Lessons vs. Group Programs: What’s the Difference?
This is where a lot of parents get stuck, so here’s a simple breakdown:
- Private lessons are best if you want your junior to get one-on-one attention to build fundamentals such as their grip, stance, ball position and basic swing mechanics.
- Group programs, like Operation 36, are the fastest way for your junior to learn how to play golf. The group dynamic results in more competition, community, and camaraderie, and as a result, players tend to improve faster than they do in the individual, one-on-one, private lesson environment.
My honest recommendation is to start with a group program. The sooner your junior begins having fun playing golf out on the golf course with their friends, the more they’re going to enjoy themselves.
What Does a First Lesson Look Like?
Parents are often surprised to learn that the first lesson isn’t just about hitting balls as hard as possible. It begins with fundamentals such as grip and posture while taking an encouraging approach so your junior has fun and actually wants to come back. The goal isn’t the perfect swing, it’s making sure the experience is positive and that it leaves your junior looking forward to the next session.

Why Fall Is a Great Time to Start in Tucson
Arizona summers can make outdoor coaching difficult after about ten o’clock in the morning. Fall changes all of that! Cooler mornings and school schedules settling down all make the next six months one of the best times to get a junior golfer going and to build a consistent routine.
