Callaway at the U.S. Open: 6 Things You Need to Know

One of the coolest things about being a Callaway Golf Professional Staffer is that you get a Callaway Retail Marketing Newsletter to your email inbox several times per month. Team Callaway is in Southhampton, New York covering this year’s 2nd major, the U.S. Open at historic Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.

Callaway Golf has 21 staffers in the field ranging from Phil Mickelson (who’s going for the career grand slam) to pre-tournament favorites Sergio Garcia and Henrik Stenson vying for their 2nd major titles. Here’s a look at what’s in Phil’s bag this week as he guns for his 1st U.S. Open Championship:

Six Things You Need to Know
How Many Staffers Do We Have in the Field?
21! Our team is loaded with pre-tournament favorites like Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, and Henrik Stenson, strong contenders like Xander Schauffele, Alex Noren, Kevin Kisner, and a great group of young guns.

Team Callaway gets Stars and Stripes Chrome Soft Truvis for range balls.

Who Should I Be Rooting For?
Phil! To be clear, you should always root for Phil, but this week is on a different level. If Lefty wins, he will have his first U.S. Open title AND he’ll be just the 6th player ever to complete the grand slam. He’s one of the greatest players of all-time, and a victory here will put him in golf’s most exclusive club.

What Other Callaway Stories Should I Be Following?
You should get to know our young guns Sam Burns and Aaron Wise. They’re both just 21, they both made it through sectional qualifying (Burns was medalist in his qualifier with a scorching 62-66 performance, and Wise birdied his last hole and then birdied the first playoff hole to get in), and they’re both having great seasons.

Sam has won on the Web.com and contended on the PGA Tour, and Aaron got his first Tour win just a few weeks ago at the AT&T Byron Nelson.

What Else Should I Keep An Eye Out For?
As you saw in the tweet above, our staffers are hitting our new Chrome Soft Truvis Stars & Stripes golf balls on the range. These balls have been incredibly popular so far with their USA color patterns of stars and stripes featured on the ball. And Sergio Garcia is in a new Odyssey EXO Rossie Putter.

Are You Making Bags Or Coins?
Yes, and they might be our best ones yet. They look great and the patriotic red, white, and blue design is perfect for the U.S. Open. Get yours now before they run out quickly.

What Can You Tell Me About The Course?
It’s in amazing shape and it’s going to provide a great test for everyone this week. Expect a lot of aerial shots of the course and the surrounding area in the Hamptons and New York City. And if we know anything about crowds in New York, it’s going to be LOUD. We can’t wait!

Team Callaway has designed special headcovers and coins to commemorate the 118th U.S. Open this week.

Behind the Design
By MBrowningCG, Community Manager

As we approach US Open week, I am excited to reveal the headcovers and coins that we have created in commemorate the 118th playing of the event at Shinnecock Hills Golf Course.

Our June Major cover celebrates our national championship and the historic host venue with a red and white stripe pattern (as seen on Shinnecock’s flag sticks), complete with a nod to the Montauk Lighthouse, an iconic symbol of Long Island. With that, the commemorative coin pays homage to the Shinnecock Indian Nation that helped construct the golf course.

The coin and headcovers will be available for purchase beginning June 8th on Callawaygolf.com.

Shinnecock Hills Golf Club
Shinnecock claims to be the oldest formal organized golf club in the United States, established in 1891. Located in Southampton, New York on Long Island, the club was built on a sandhill adjoining the Long Island Rail Road just east of the Shinnecock Canal. It was designed by Willie Davis and initially opened as a twelve hole golf course, but expanded to eighteen in 1895.

Members of the Shinnecock Indian Nation helped build the course. Shinnecock was one of the five founding clubs of the United States Golf Association and has hosted the US Open four times(1896, 1986, 1995, 2004) prior to 2018. They will again play host in 2026.

The Montauk Lighthouse located on the eastern tip of Long Island was built in 1796.

The coin features two feathers drawing inspiration from the Shinnecock Hills logo that can be found across the property and on the flag sticks. Also, the stripe pattern seen on each of the headcovers replicates each the pins that the pros will be aiming at come next week.

Montauk Point Light
The world-famous Montauk Lighthouse is located on the eastern tip of Long Island and was built in 1796. It is the oldest lighthouse in New York, the fourth oldest in the US, and still serves as an aid to navigation to this day.

In 2012 it was designated as a National Historic Landmark for its significance to New York as well as the integral role that it played for the US international shipping trade from the 1800s on.

The lighthouse is predominantly featured on top of each of the headcovers.

Every month, our expert wedge craftsman Anthony Taranto will design and produce a set of three unique wedges that will be available for purchase with proceeds going to charity. To give everyone a fair shot, we’re blind auctioning them away.

AT is at it again with some beautiful U.S. Open-inspired custom wedges.

This month, all proceeds will go to Phil and Tina Mickelson’s Birdies for the Brave Foundation.  Birdies for the Brave is a national military outreach initiative dedicated to honoring and showing appreciation to the courageous men and women of the United States Armed Forces and their families.

Place your bid on this set of three (3) one-of-a-kind “USA” Callaway Customs Tour Limited wedges on or before Wednesday, June 20th.
